OF SCIENCES OF THE REPUBLIC OF ARMENIA
Armen Sergo Hayrapetyan
Director of SCAS of NAS
In 1997 the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences, considering expedient and urgent the existence of an Armenological structure in Gyumri, decided to create a center for material and spiritual culture in Shirak, which was functioning as a branch of the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography of the National Academy of Sciences until 2002. Since 2003, the Center has been granted the status of an independent SNCO, renamed the Center for Armenian Studies in Shirak, which is the only non-capitalized Armenology structure of the RA NAS with 22 employees (scientific staff, 18 researchers, 2 doctors of sciences and 13 candidates of sciences). From the day of creation, the Center's main scientific directions are the historical Shirak province ethnography, old and new history, archaeology and folklore issues, as well as ethno-psychological and sociological researches that are being carried out in the region's present territory.
